Workshop “Sediment management opportunities to address the climate change challenge” – 10 and 11 February 2021

Please save Wednesday 10 February 2021 afternoon and Thursday 11 February 2021 morning in your 2021-diary for the on-line workshop “Sediment management opportunities to address the climate change challenge”.

This workshop is organised by Navigating a Changing Climate (NavClimate) and SedNet.
NavClimate is a PIANC-led Global Climate Action initiative under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) ‘non-state actor’ process, set up to promote the sharing of knowledge on how ports and waterborne transport infrastructure can reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.

It promises to be an inspiring workshop for sediment practitioners (policy and management) as well as scientists. Invited key-note speakers and selected abstracts will address in the following (non-parallel) sessions – with room for Q&A – these four topics:

1. Role of sediment management in carbon sequestration and storage: opportunities to contribute to a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions;
2. Sediments and climate change adaptation: seeking flexible and adaptive solutions to strengthen resilience and adapt port and navigation infrastructure and operations;
3. Habitat enhancement and creation, Working-with-Nature and other nature-based solutions;
4. Sediment management, circular economy and the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle.

The four workshop sessions conclude with a panel discussion and an interactive session with the audience to determine:

• Key climate change-related challenges for sediment managers;
• Key opportunities for sediment management to contribute to addressing the climate change challenge;
• Key topics for further research and development.

New deadline Call for Abstracts 12^th International SedNet Conference, Lille, France

The new deadline for submitting abstracts for the 12^th International SedNet Conference, Lille, France “Sediment Challenges and Opportunities due to Climate Change and Sustainable Development” on 29 June – 2 July 2021 is 4 January 2021.

“Water4All – Water Security for the Planet” – Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

The “Water4All – Water Security for the Planet” – Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda is now available for consultation until 11 January 2021. Contributions are welcome to further consolidate the agenda, promote its wide diffusion and adoption, and capture priorities. Feel free to disseminate the survey through relevant networks and organisations, to maximise stakeholders’ inputs to the co-design of this SRIA.

“Water4All – Water Security for the Planet” is a candidate Partnership under the European Commission Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Framework Programme with the objective of enabling water security for all on the long term. The draft SRIA has been developed by a Working Group bringing together representatives of the European Commission and main water-related initiatives, networks of experts and associations in Europe (Water JPI, EurAqua, EurEau, Aqua Publica Europea, Water Europe, European Water Association).

Sediment sessions at EGU General Assembly 2021

The upcoming EGU General Assembly will take place entirely online on 19-30 April 2021. Abstract submission is due 13 January 2021 at 13:00 CET.

VALSE project: treatment of 16 tons of Walloon dredged sediments, which will be used in the construction of a bicycle path

VALSE project is an Interreg V France–Wallonia–Flanders project, led by ISSeP, aiming to validate valorisation scenarios of sediment and other materials. One scenario is the building of a large demonstrator, consisting of a bicycle path in concrete containing a fraction of Walloon channel sediment. The concrete formulation was developed by one project partner, IMT Lille-Douai, and is based on the replacement of a certain percentage of the concrete sand fraction by sediment.

CTP, the project partner responsible of providing treated sediment fractions, recently completed his objective to treat 16 tons of dredging sediments. This sediment is mainly silty and shows a medium degree of pollution. However, the sediment presents large agglomerates of materials, which are not able to enter concrete mixer or can induce heterogeneities inside the concrete. Therefore, a treatment is necessary to allow sediment incorporation in concrete at large scale.

Starting from 16 tons collected in the lagoon located at “Ampsin” (province of Liège), a further passive drying was applied. Then a succession of sieving and grinding with roller crushers was applied to deagglomerate the sediment. Toothed and fluted roller crushers were used. The recovered material consists of sufficiently fine particles and is now suitable to be incorporated in concrete and especially enter in the mixer of the concrete plant.

The work about the concrete bicycle path will be carried out during 2021.

AquaConSoil 2021 – webinar series & focus week; Call for Initiatives

Instead of the usual week-long conference, AquaConSoil will be organized in 2021 as a series of webinars and other digital activities throughout the year, starting on January 19^th, 2021, leading to a digital focus week between June 14^th – June 18^th, 2021. The overall theme of AquaConSoil 2021 is on “Strong connections for Sustainable Use and Management of Soil, Sediment and Water Resources”.

AquaConSoil will host interesting and inspiring keynote speakers and organize interactive sessions throughout the year. On January 19^th, 2021, Annemieke Nijhof, CEO of Deltares, will give the first keynote on the importance of connections for the soil-sediment-water system. You can sign up for the keynote session on January 19^th via this link. The other keynote speakers and digital activities will be revealed soon.

A Call for Initiatives is now open: not only scientific abstracts are welcome, but also abstracts for project presentations and new project ideas. You can submit an abstract for an online presentation or an online session to be scheduled in the week of 14-18 June 2021). The Call for Initiatives will close on Sunday February 14^th.
