We are pleased to announce the 14th International SedNet Conference. The conference will be held from the 6th until the 10th of October 2025, at the University of Madrid in Madrid, Spain. The conference theme is “Healthy Sediments”.
Stay tuned for more details about the conference and the call for abstracts!
From June 4-5, the SedNet workshop was held in Hamburg, Germany, bringing together experts, researchers, and professionals to discuss the latest developments and innovations in sediment management. On June 4th, the Working Group Circular Economy and the Working Group Quality held joint sessions, while the Working Group Education-Science-Policy Interfacing & Sediment Management Concepts (ESPI-SMC) also organised a session.
On June 5th, the excursion took place to the METHA Plant, the dewatering and S25 Project fields. The site visits were followed by a guided boat tour through the Harbor of Hamburg. The excursion day concluded with a delightful dinner.
The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for networking, learning, and sharing knowledge with professionals from diverse backgrounds.
We are pleased to share the summaries of the workshops and the presentations with you.
To give you an impression of the SedNet workshop, we have compiled a short aftermovie.
Thank you to all participants and presenters during the workshop days. If you are interested in learning more about SedNet activities or joining a working group, please reach out to the SedNet secretariat.
Sediment literacy can be defined as “The state of knowing about or being familiar with sediment. It concerns both a popular awareness about the importance of sediment and specialized, practice-oriented knowledge related to achieving sediment health.”*
SedNet wants to boost sediment literacy!
Thus, we ask you to please share inspiring examples to boost sediment literacy. These can be (serious) games, stories, narratives, short movies, infographics, cartoons, podcasts, lectures, training sessions, courses, artistic expressions, etc.
Share your examples with us by sending them to the SedNet secretariat.
Depending on the materials we receive, we will determine the most appropriate format(s) to share these examples publicly and broadly.
For some inspiration, we want to kick off with the inspiring narrative “The Sound of Sediment” by the Dutch artist Carmen Molenaar.
We are looking forward to receiving your examples!

Recently, the Journal of Soils and Sediments accepted a paper presented at the SedNet Lisbon Conference 2023 on the Beneficial Use (BU) of sediments. This paper discusses the tools, pilot sites, and measuring techniques developed and used within seven European Union INTERREG projects. While not strictly a SedNet-only paper, most of the authors are SedNet members and active in the SedNet CE community. We hope that the article helps promote the BU of sediments based on a broad set of criteria, including direct economic costs, risks related to contaminants, societal benefits like job creation and habitat restoration, and the impact of doing nothing compared to BU.
By combining the expertise and lessons learned from seven EU INTERREG projects in one paper and providing links to tools that can help evaluate the impact on different criteria, we hope that all stakeholders benefit from these insights and tools. The paper has been published online and can be downloaded via the SharedIt link.
Best regards,
The SedNet CE workgroup
Dear SedNet Members,
We are reaching out to the network with a special request on behalf of our colleague, Daniele Di Trapani, a PhD student at the University of Palermo. Daniele has been awarded a research doctorate to support his ongoing research activities and is eager to gain experience in an international academic or research environment.
Daniele’s research focuses on the feasibility of biologically treating polluted marine sediments, either independently or in conjunction with physical-chemical pre-treatments. His work involves conducting biological processes in slurry reactors, investigating operational parameters such as pollutant levels and process duration, as well as exploring the impact of biomass inoculation. Additionally, he aims to identify optimal pre-treatment methods, including innovative oxidation or adsorption processes, to enhance the efficiency of biological treatments. His research covers a range of sediment types with the ultimate goal of developing sustainable management and reclamation strategies for polluted marine environments.
We would greatly appreciate any interest from SedNet members who may be willing to host Daniele in their laboratories. He is fully self-sufficient in terms of accommodation abroad, supported by a doctoral per diem specifically allocated for periods spent overseas. The intended duration of his stay is a maximum of six months.
Thank you in advance for any leads or advice you can provide. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail. We eagerly await your response.
Kind regards,
Marco Capello
Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography
The International Association for Sediment Water Science (IASWS) is a network of scientists interested in sediments and their interactions with water and biota in aquatic systems. The association brings together scientists from various disciplines like earth scientists, biologists, chemists and environmental engineers whose interests pertain to sediment-water interactions in all aquatic systems. A major feature on the IASWS calendar is the tri-annual International Symposium On The Interactions Between Sediments and Water, with the next symposium to be held from 30 June to 4th July 2025 at Le Touquet, France.
Main conference topics:
• Assessing and restoring disturbed catchments
• Biogeochemistry in the hyporheic zone
• Biogenic influences on sediment‒water interactions from micro to macro scale
• Carbon budgets and blue carbon ecosystems
• Coastline, coastal erosion and solutions
• Emerging contaminants in sediments
• Extreme events and environments (droughts, floods, wildfires etc.)
• Modelling suspended particles and aquatic sediments
• Rewilding and restoration of coastal areas
• Sediment management
• Sediment-associated nutrients and contaminant processes
• Water quality and organic matter along the watershed‒river‒sea continuum
• Other topics related to sediment‒water interactions

The Union of International Associations (UIA) cordially invites European Sediment Network to participate in its 18th Associations Round Table Europe at Palazzo Degli Affari, Florence, Italy. The event will take place on Thursday 14 & Friday 15 November 2024.
The UIA Associations Round Table Europe 2024 is an event designed for participants working in and with international associations.
Thanks to the support of the UIA host team in Florence – Destination Florence Convention Bureau, Firenze Fiera and the OIC Group – and of our sponsors, we are able to offer a high-level educational programme for a low fee. The registration fee for Round Table Europe 2024 is EUR 95.00 (plus 22% VAT). You are welcome to register any number of delegates; each of your delegates will need to register separately.
What to expect:
– Presentations on common challenges by peers working in international associations and by experts.
– Discussions in workshops and break-out rooms with the chance to ask in-depth questions and to share and exchange knowledge and experience.
– The UIA team and the host team will moderate the sessions throughout, guiding and assisting the delegates.
Networking breaks, lunch, cocktail reception.
– Four exciting tours to discover Florence.
View all topics of the programme and the schedule below.
UIA is an independent non-profit research institute founded in 1907 which has documented and promoted the work of international associations for more than 115 years.
Sincerely,
